x four days (and two exams) away from finishing my degree (finally)
x i got published! well, sort of. just in this sociology journal thingy at kyoto uni. nothing exciting, but there is 70 pages in there with my name on it. and it's pretty and bound and everything. and green! a smaller article i wrote on murakami haruki's underground made it in there too.
x this winter is shaping up to be full of lots of great gigs: cat power (just got my ticket! even though i don't know anyone else going...), sonic youth, the microphones (!) and now belle and sebastian too (edit: and fourtet/manitoba, i almost forgot about that and it's only a few days away!)
x job interview on wednesday
x my hibernation this weekend was only disturbed by going out for seriously the best japanese i have had in melbourne in a really, really long time. at this small restaurant that we had to book months ago. so so good!
x moving house tomorrow!!!

Just? Just? A sociology journal from Kyoto Uni doesn't sound like a "just". It sounds like a "wowsuperexcitingimportantstuff!!!!"

hehe, well it's not a *real* journal... kind of hard to explain. it gets distributed to most unis in japan i think, and put in libraries etc, but it's not actually for sale. does that make sense?

um
i just put the title into english in my head but it sounds really dumb
"globalisation and nationalism" - it's a comparison of attitudes towards japan amongst young people who have spent time living overseas and those who have never left japan, basically.

heh, thanks.
i should have a copy of it on disk somwhere around here... not sure where though but i can have a look if you want! the murakami one is pretty short and fairly interesting (is it narcissistic of me to say that? hehe), but the other one is very long and probably pretty tedious... heh

if you get the chance to unearth the disk, do send it my way! (but don't go out of your way, i know you're busy)

no narcissism, in my opinion. murakami = good, so writing about him automatically = good to me. ;)

that is so good! the list of the awesome bands that are coming out just keeps growing. I heard sigur ros are supposably coming out the other day. i just need to make sure i remember when tickets go on sale for such gigs so i don't miss out.

sigur ros too?! oh wow! i saw them last year and they were totally amazing. i hope that one is true! there are rumours for low as well... this year just gets better and better re bands coming out here... so good!
i know what you mean about forgetting when tickets go on sale though - if it wasn't for brett always buying his at 9am then reminding me, i would have missed a few this year already i think..

i missed out on cat power last year and judging by all reports it will be an intersting show, i dont mind if she has a 'nervous'breakdown of sorts as i am sure i will be able to understand.

its ok, i dont think i know anyone going to all of those shows, (exept for microphones) though i will be in attendance, except for sonic youth, but i find this fact amusing/exciting and going to see shows on your own can be quite an art i think.

i think the microphones will be of interest. grainery lane sounds far but colourful and i am wondering how many people the rob roy holds, and whether the pubilc office will be an option. this depends all on the rob roy though.

yeah i missed out on cat power last year as well. so am very very much looking forward to her. even if she does break down.

i have started to get my method of going to shows on my own downpat lately, it's a very precise art... sometimes it's great but other times not so fun. i think cat power could be a good one for that though.
lone show going always seems to make me wish i smoked so i had something to do with my hands though.

i am especially looking forward to the microphones. am thinking of taking a day trip up to ballarat (overnight even?) to make the most of it, because grainery lane definitely sounds like it would be a great place. i have a feeling the rob roy show could end up very packed too, although who knows. that's what i thought one time when i went to see him and there only ended up being about 15 people in the audience. i think seeing as it will be holidays and all, i might end up going to all his shows... heh/

hah! my strategies involve making calculated eye movements and skulking about like i know what i am doing. making very deliberate hand movements and going to the toilet at least twice is also an option.

yes, smoking. luckily i have been indulging in some joint smoking of late, so i have been handling smoking in general better then normal. if one does decide to smoke, it is best to have rollies, as this takes up even more time if the bands take an hour to set up, as they normaly seem to.

i hope that there is a small audience at the rob roy. i find it distressing when the band room gets really packed. i got ticket number 135, so i hope there will not be many more sales. i never know what to expect with these things. i dont even know what his status is as a musician, like how well known he is here. i am guessing not that well known b/c he is playing at the rob roy? but who knows. i know him from the radio and i dont even listen to it that much. how was he when you saw him play? i really dont know what to expect. i bought the live in japan recording and was really floored by it. i had yet to experience a songwriter exploring my current crisis so well. it was an extremely well timed meeting for me and so have been listening to it constantly both recorded electronically and mnemonically, if that makes sense. actually i am going to purchase another recording this afternoon.

deliberate hand movements and toilet trips are definitely on my agenda too. although the one thing i tend to do most lately, and i hate it, is fiddle with my mobile phone. which is stupid because it has no games, i am too poor to send millions of text messages (so most of the time i am just pretending), it looks stupid, and i hate phones. urgh.
do you ever go in for the reading a book method? very defiantly alone. i'm sort of two minds re this one.
rollies would definitely be the best option though. especially because my rolling skills are so bad that it would probably take me the whole hour the band is setting up just to roll a decent one! hah.
one of my main problems with going to gigs alone is that it would be okay if i was drinking, because not only does that give you something to do with yourself it also makes everything seem better (or that's the plan anyway), but if i am going alone then i just end up driving. although i won't have a car after this week so i guess i'll just become an alcoholic...

i hope it's small at the rob roy too, although i don't really like our chances... that reminds me, i have to go and get myself a ticket still though. i really have no idea how well he is known here either, i was surprised when i heard that he will be playing such small venues here (but pleased). i've sort of blown him up in my head though as one of my favourites, so i just assume that he is huge, but i don't think he quite is really. i've been loving him especially lately as well, although i've been hooked for quite a while.
he was amazing when i saw him - i saw two of the other shows on the japan tour (so disappointed that i wasn't at the ones they recorded, now that would be special to own). they were a bit different though, because it wasn't actually a microphones tour - the first night (the one with barely anyone there) was mostly him & calvin johnson & kyle field (little wings) all playing together, officially only calvin & lw but in reality a mix of all of them. the second show was officially calvin & phil, but kyle joined in too. one of those shows that i don't know how to put into words though (without using way too many cliches like "magical"). some of the photos i took are here, seeing as i can't think of any way to describe them that would do justice. he is beautiful though.

and yay for another recording! what one are you going to get? i have been thinking of getting another too, but i haven't been able to make up my mind.

yes, the phone is one thing i've never done. i notice that alone people do use their phone alot. the eerie glow of the phone just puts me off, and its bad for my decaying eye sight. as is the computer, but im doing overdue assignmnets. so.

gone one step better then the book mthod, and did homework once when i was by myself. i felt quite intimidated because there was hardly anyone in the room. i could hardly see because i was using the light of a shit tealight candle, but didnt want to move out of the corner where there'd be more light so just pretended that i could see well, and kept on writing.

i also have poor rolling skills but am getting better but find it embarassing when i fail as i just spill tobacco everywhere and the cigarette keeps on going out. and i never used to drink even though i caught the train ,but now cannot even if i want to as i have finally gained my 'license' and approval to borrow a family members car.

i will buy mteerie i think, it sounds epic, and thats the one that i wanted to buy in the first place and the first song i heard of microphones came off that album and i said "what is this?! i feel like i am in a glass jar." but everytime i went to missing link it was not there and i asked last time and they claim that it will be coming in soon. but i dont know, they all sound likable. the glow part ii sounds likable. is theer one youd suggest in particular?

the phone is just sort of an easy escape, but not a very good one. i'd like to stop using that one actually, but always get stuck thinking of other things to do with myself.
doing homework there is very impressive though!! i've never gone that far. although i guess i can't really add that on to my list of things to do for the next few gigs, seeing as (thank god) it will be HOLIDAYS by then!

they didn't have any microphones at missing link last time i was there (late last week?) i don't think, apart from the live in japan album, but i might be wrong... mt eerie is definitely amazing, i don't actually own it though. if you don't have the glow part ii you should get that though! it's my favourite by far, not that i've heard all that many others, but i am very very attached to that album. then again, if i actually owned mt eerie i might say the same thing, so...

the good thing about quoting things that are in japanese, is that there is no way lecturers can/will check it up, so you can totally make up the quote... haha. erm, not that i would ever do that...
but yes, here is your next reference for pop fic:

after about three days with no electricity and no housemates last week, i made sure i acquired a television on the weekend. i didn't even last a week! i never realised how much i would miss it, it's so strange. and now that i have one i realise how much i don't really want to watch it, because we can't even get any decent programs in tune, but still. i agree with you about the no book substituting thing. it's an entirely different thing, i am coming to realise.
